The run from Vancouver
Revelstoke is about 565 km out, roughly six hours — the Coquihalla to Kamloops, then Highway 1 east through Salmon Arm and Sicamous. Eagle Pass sits immediately west of town. The section that governs everything is east of Revelstoke: Rogers Pass, at 1,330 m, taking roughly 10 metres of snow a winter at treeline and closing about 100 hours a year for avalanche control. Three provincial snowsheds sit on that stretch, all built in 1963 — Jack MacDonald at 141 m, Twins at 188 m, and Lanark at 316 m, the longest in BC. Loads terminating in Revelstoke stop short of all that; loads continuing to Golden or Alberta do not, and get planned accordingly.
What moves here
BC Hydro is the current story. Revelstoke Dam stands 175 m high and runs 2,480 MW across five Francis units, and construction started in spring 2026 on a sixth and final 500 MW unit, in service by December 2032. The workforce peaks around 180 in 2029, with roughly $60 million in local spending on goods, materials and services along the way — a seven-year construction programme at the far end of a 565 km run. Downie Timber, owned by the Gorman Group, employs around 285 people across its sawmill, planer and remanufacturing lines, cutting 110 to 120 million board feet a year with a specialty in Western Red Cedar; its operations manager once described it as the last mill standing between Salmon Arm and Golden. Revelstoke remains a CPKC crew terminal, though the railway is relocating about 125 railroaders to Kamloops in 2026 on cost-of-living grounds. The city counted 8,275 people in 2021, up 9.4% from 2016.
Scales and seasonal limits
There is no inspection station at Revelstoke. Coming out you pass the Hope cluster and the two Kamloops scales on the Trans-Canada; Golden is the next one east. BC posts spring load restrictions as a percentage of legal axle loading — 100%, 70% or 50% — applied only above 5,500 kg licensed GVW. Winter tires or chains are required on Highway 1 through here from 1 October to 30 April.
Local fun fact
The avalanche control programme at Rogers Pass is the longest-running Canadian Forces operation in the country’s history, and it is ending. Since 1961 the Royal Canadian Artillery has fired 105 mm howitzers from 16 gun positions along the Trans-Canada, covering 40 km of highway, 135 avalanche paths and about 270 pre-calibrated targets — the only domestic Canadian Armed Forces operation providing live fire support. The military notified Parks Canada it will not renew, and the agreement expires on 17 August 2027.
