Description
What’s included: $9,890 flat truck rate covers fuel and deadhead, size/weight limits (800 lbs, 5’7″ bed, 60″ height max — larger loads require the trailer at $12,365), layover ($375) and detention ($140/hr — 30 min free at pickup, 30 min free at drop-off, tracked separately) apply on top if triggered.
The run from Vancouver
Kitimat is roughly 1,500 km from the Lower Mainland — 16 to 18 hours one way. That exceeds a single driver’s day, so this lane is planned around a rest break, not squeezed. The route runs the Coquihalla to Kamloops, Highway 97 north to Prince George, Highway 16 west for 575 km to Terrace, then 59 km south on Highway 37. There is no true mountain pass on Highway 16 west of Prince George — the road follows the Nechako, Bulkley and Skeena valleys, and the high points are only Six Mile Summit at 850 m and Hungry Hill at 844 m. Fuel is the real constraint. Kitwanga to Terrace is about 94 km with essentially no services, and there is no fuel at all on the 59 km between Terrace and Kitimat.
What moves here
Kitimat is an industrial town with two anchors and a third under construction. Rio Tinto BC Works produces around 420,000 tonnes of aluminium a year from 384 reduction cells, powered by the 896 MW Kemano station, and put $135 million into reliability work in 2026. LNG Canada started up in 2025 — first cargo loaded 30 June, Train 2 in production by November, 14 million tonnes a year across Phase 1. Cedar LNG, a 3.3 million tonne floating facility majority-owned by the Haisla Nation, is under construction for service in late 2028. Coastal GasLink feeds all of it: 670 km of pipe moving 2.1 billion cubic feet a day. The town counted 8,236 people in 2021 and about 10,020 by July 2025 — 9.6% growth in a single year, the fastest of any small municipality in BC.
Scales and seasonal limits
The Terrace commercial vehicle inspection station opened in June 2024 at the Highway 16 and Highway 37 roundabout, so every Kitimat run passes it. It has weigh-in-motion sensors, automated vehicle identification and over-height detection. Both Prince George scales are listed as temporarily closed. BC posts spring load restrictions as a percentage of legal axle loading — 100%, 70% or 50% — with a tandem group dropping from 17,000 kg to 11,900 kg at 70% and 8,500 kg at 50%. They apply only to vehicles licensed above 5,500 kg GVW, and northern districts stay restricted longer than the south. Current status is posted on DriveBC.
Local fun fact
Kitimat is a planned town, not a settlement that grew on its own. Alcan had it laid out by Clarence Stein, the American Garden City planner, and it was incorporated in 1953 with industry deliberately separated from housing and more than 45 km of pedestrian walkways. The engineering behind it is the better story: in three years, 6,000 workers built the Kenney Dam — the largest rockfill dam in the world at the time, and one with no spillway of its own — bored a 16 km tunnel through Mount DuBose, and put the powerhouse 427 m inside the mountain at the bottom of a 790 m vertical drop.
