The run from Vancouver
Cranbrook is about 842 km out, roughly 11 hours, and there are two genuinely different ways in. Highway 3 the whole way from Hope is the shorter one, and it crosses Kootenay Pass at 1,774 m — the highest point on the Crowsnest — before dropping through Creston, Yahk and Moyie. The alternative runs the Coquihalla to Kamloops, Highway 1 east through Rogers Pass and the Kicking Horse Canyon to Golden, then Highway 95 south, coming in at roughly 950 km. That is about 110 km and an hour and a half longer, and it is the route we take when Kootenay Pass is closed for avalanche control. Cranbrook runs on Mountain time, so it is an hour ahead of the Lower Mainland — an 09:00 dispatch here is a 10:00 arrival window on the consignee’s clock.
What moves here
Cranbrook is the service, retail and healthcare centre for the East Kootenay, and the industrial demand sits about 100 km east in the Elk Valley. Those four steelmaking coal mines are no longer Teck’s — Teck sold the business in November 2023, and Glencore acquired a 77% interest in Elk Valley Resources for US$6.93 billion, closing in July 2024, with Nippon Steel and POSCO holding the balance. EVR employs roughly 5,500 people, though it cut 140 positions in 2025 on weak market conditions. East Kootenay Regional Hospital is the region’s referral hospital. Canadian Rockies International Airport has an 8,000-foot runway with a Category 1 instrument landing system, which makes it the most capable airport in the Kootenays, and both WestJet and Air Canada expanded service there in 2025. The city counted 20,499 people in 2021 and about 22,733 by the 2024 estimate.
Scales and seasonal limits
Coming in on Highway 3 you pass the Hope cluster, then Castlegar, then Yahk between Creston and Cranbrook. On the northern route it is the Golden station, which has a weigh-in-motion bypass. Sparwood covers the Elk Valley east of town. BC posts spring load restrictions as a percentage of legal axle loading — 100%, 70% or 50% — applied only above 5,500 kg licensed GVW. Winter tires or chains are required on Highway 3 and Highway 1 from 1 October to 30 April.
Local fun fact
Cranbrook exists because of a routing decision. In 1898 Colonel James Baker persuaded the Canadian Pacific Railway to run its Crowsnest line through Cranbrook instead of Fort Steele, the established boom town a few kilometres away. Cranbrook became a division point and the region’s economic centre; Fort Steele emptied out. The legacy is a collection of 28 railway cars now held in town, including a complete restored seven-car 1929 Trans-Canada Limited — a luxury train that only ran for two seasons before the Depression ended it.
